Many prospective college students look forward to moving to their college campus for the four years of their Bachelor’s degree program. For at least the first year or two or your degree program, you’ll likely be living in a small dorm room with one or two other students. While this can engender a feeling of camaraderie and community, living in such a tight space has its challenges. For one, you will have to pack strategically in order for two or three people to fit everything they need into the room. Packing can be a stressful experience, but with some good planning, you’ll remember to bring everything you need for a successful year at college.

Making a list is the best way to avoid forgetting anything. You should organize your list according to categories with headers such as electronics, bedding, furniture, etc. Think of every possible thing you will need in each category and cross off the items as you pack them.

Communicate with your roommates when you are going shopping for college furnishings and supplies. If there are three of you sharing a room, you might end up with three mini fridges if you don’t plan ahead of time who will bring what. Perhaps you can even go shopping with your roommates and share the expenses of items you’ll all be sharing, such as an area rug or small television set.

You’ll have to be particularly careful when packing clothes, as you likely will not have very much closet space in your dorm room. Your best bet is to bring basics that generally mix and match well. Also, make sure to have one or two dressy outfits just in case. If your college is not too far from home, you can probably bring clothes just for each current season and switch out as the weather changes.

Each room should have a set of cleaning supplies and a first aid kit, so arrange with your roommates who will bring these items. You’ll probably want carpet cleaner in case of spills, dust cloths for cleaning, and a can of air freshener. A first aid kit is a good idea to have on hand for minor cuts and scrapes.

Keep the size of your dorm room in mind when shopping for furnishings. Your college can give you a good idea of the room’s dimensions so that you can shop for small-scale furniture. Think foldable chairs and narrow storage units that can easily be tucked away. Remember that one or two roommates will be sharing the space with you, so bringing a recliner and large TV is simply not going to work.

Storage can be a creative challenge in such a tight space. Look for storage solutions such as boxes which slide under the bed or hanging organizers that mount on the back of a door. Dorms can become messy in a matter of minutes if every item does not have a proper place. You’ll especially want to be careful about food items in a dorm, as these can draw unwelcome visitors like mice. Make sure your food storage containers have tightly-fitting lids.

Planning for your four year degree is a fun and anticipation-filled time in every student’s life! Don’t forget to enjoy furnishing and decorating your new room. With careful planning and organization, you’ll have everything you need. It would be to your benefit to become familiar with online schools details.
